Book Review on The Flood by James Heneghan

You are walking on the street and before long; a friend of yours is saying that there is a flood coming their way. Not such an easy thing to believe on an average day where your normal friend is saying normal stuff and walking a normal path with a normal you. But then again, it can happen. One of those lucky ones to survive something made of water and bigger than a mountain is a little guy named Andy who wasn't even thinking about it, when it is staring him in the face. "Flood", is about an eleven year old boy named Andy who seems to have lost his mind and purposely runs away to find his dad when a flood suddenly hits his home after weeks of unrelenting rain and delivers terror to the town. Andy survives after a group of watchful Sheehogue push him to safety, but his mother and step-father both die in the flood. Suddenly, the world Andy has always known is gone and he is all alone. All of this makes him forget all the common sense he used to know and carries on carelessly, not knowing where he's going or where he's taking himself to. Blind to everything around him, he has to struggle with doing the right thing to get to his dad's house where he has always lived before he got divorced.

After conquering the flood, Andy is forced to leave Vancouver and move in with his grim-faced Aunt Mona in Halifax. There, Andy realizes what has just happened and knocks some sense into his brain, and he makes the happy discovery that his real father, Vincent Flynn, lives nearby. After all that confusion, Andy runs away and finally reaches his Dad's house and begins to live a simpler life as before. But his dad can't seem to feed a growing boy. His gambling and drinking habits have police and thugs alike knocking on his door day and night. Day by day Andy's hard life with his poor dad makes him more careful and sensible about his actions. Until his dad is finally able to trust him enough to let him go so he can get a job and raise his own family. Along the way, Andy is captured by police and gets sent back to aunt Marry who previously tried to take him away from his dad and makes him live with her in Halifax. Believe it or not, Andy runs away again - at least he tries to. Her aunt punishes him scornfully and gives him hard time. It looks like he is here to stay. Will Amy finally pull himself together and escape his new home? You have to read the book to find out.

Although there were not many hints that gave me an answer, I thought the theme of the story was that you should always be expecting big changes in life. From living a simple life to suddenly a desperate flood pulled in that pushes Andy to a new world he never knew, Andy learned to take care of him. Andy learned one of life's toughest lessons. He used to be a careless boy but now, he has grown up and is much more caring.

I enjoyed this book because it was exciting and it always made me want to read more of the chapter. The author constantly put interesting plots on each page, and sometimes you don't even know what's gong to happen next. I would recommend thins book to middle and high school students because it warns them at a young age to always be on their guard.
