The pigs, Billy and Tom climb up some steps to the summit of a big hill. However, the grass is slippery and they fall down. They fall down the hill and their friends Milly and Tilly, who try to rescue them, also fall down. The story ends with the pigs upset at the bottom of the hill.

These phonic books are 100% decodable and use works up to phonic phase 4. The art of storytelling when constrained to certain words can be difficult, but it an art that Greenwood has truly mastered having published over 100 books in her career. The emotion and intrigue in each book encourages children to want to read on and far from reading being a chore, they will find it more of a pleasure.

The vocabulary used in this book includes: Phase 2: on, Tom, off, hill. Phase 3: them, that, bang. Phase 4: grip, skid, jump.

The vowel digraphs used include: "ee": see, "ow": down and "oo": look.

Follifoot Farm Decodable Books - Blending Series Book 5 Review

It is now widely accepted that phonic books and worksheets are the most important educational tools when teaching young children how to read. You should only purchase high quality phonic books which have been written to comply with Department of Education guidelines and standards. One such collection if the Follifoot Farm Blends series, aimed at key stage 1 children up to level four phonics.

The Follifoot Farm collection of books are written and illustrated by respected phonic author Marlene Greenwood. Her previous collection of Jelly and Bean books are used by educational institutions throughout both the UK and Japan and Follifoot Farm introduces new characters and locations to the reader. Book 5 in the Blends series, "The Tent" is the final book in this particular series and upon reaching this book the child will be very familiar with the two main characters Milly and Tilly the pigs.

Milly and Tilly encounter a pig pen on the grass. Inside the tent are lots of ants and the ants quickly climb all over the two pigs. This tickles the pigs and causes them to jump and bang. The tent falls down and the pigs get stuck inside. Their mum and dad quickly come to their rescue.

The story and accompanying illustrations are silly, meaning that they are great fun for the young reader. Despite the fun tale, all the words used to tell this story are 100% decodable so you are assured that the child is reading high quality phonic material. Greenwood has a real skill in writing engaging books that will interest and amuse children (and their teachers) and this is quite rare in phonic publications.

This is a high quality series of Phonic Books. Books 1-5 incorporate phase 2, 3 and 4 phonics which children will find they can master with guidance from their teacher. The Blends series is a welcome addition to Greenwood's collection of phonic publications.
